J. Wilmer Hallman founder of Wil Hallman Retirement Development was born just outside of Pottstown, PA, graduated from Spring Ford High School and from Temple University. After working for 8 years for Sanders and Thomas Architects and Engineers in Pottstown, Wil took over directing Pottstown Youth Centre in 1970 for his retiring dad, Stanley M. Hallman, who founded the Pottstown Youth Centre in 1944. Wil remains President of PYC today. As a para church organization working with many area churches, Wil called on pastors and church leaders to inquire about what PYC could do to help the church in areas where they were unable to provide for their constituents.
One area, a wholesome Christian swim club and recreation area had already been opened in 1964.
The next area of concern by church leaders was the outcry of seniors and their families in their churches for an affordable retirement community. After Wil and his wife, Lynne visited many retirement homes in Reading and the surrounding area, and Wil reviewed how they were operated, Wil thought there must be a better way. In 1988 Wil founded Sanatoga Ridge Community, Inc (SRC) an Independent Living, Residential Care, Retirement Community. The concept Wil employed was unique to retirement communities in Pennsylvania and it remains unique in all Wil's communities today. The concept is a hybrid between a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and Active Adult Community, using many of the advantages of each, while removing their respective disadvantages. For more information on types of retirement homes in Philadelphia available today, see our tab on our website on Selecting a Retirement Community Can Be Confusing?
In 1993, the first units at SRC were occupied in what was originally to be an 80 unit community. The community was pre-sold before it was built and Wil proceeded to purchase more land and add an additional 109 units. These were also sold rapidly and Wil continued to buy and build on any available adjacent land until SRC was completely built out and sold out with 225 units in 2005. SRC consists of one, two and three bedroom single story townhouses, garden apartments and single detached houses. To ensure the continued success of SRC, Wil's son, Dave, was hired as the Administrator of SRC after 11 years with Vanguard Financial.
In order to meet the continued demand, Wil formed a new company, Wil Hallman Retirement Development (WHRD), to continue building similar communities with his unique concept. With Wil Hallman Retirement Development's recent growth, the name and logo have been professionally redone to better reflect the unique concept. So welcome to what is now called a Hallman Retirement Neighborhood (HRN).
HRN is now building Buchert Ridge Community (BRC) about 1 mile from SRC with four other communities in various stages of development. This web site will keep you informed of other communities as they develop. HRN is proud to be building the healthiest, most energy efficient homes possible. In 2011 with growing concerns over the sales of homes and making a move easier for seniors, HRN developed Distinctive Realty by Design. This program was designed for a team of professionals to work side by side with the senior, taking them through the entire process of staging, selling, moving and settling into one of our neighborhoods. Moving will never be so easy again!
Wil's Operating Officer for the team that will continue to develop the communities is Gary Gearhart. Gary grew up in Levittown, Pa, graduated from Neshaminy Maple Point and LeTourneau University. Gary has 18 years of broad business experience in engineering, marketing and sales, operations and project management.
This web site contains more information on our programs, concepts, floor plans and communities and how you or someone you know can become a part of our unique concept in an Independent Living, Residential Care, Retirement Community. Thank you and welcome to HRN!
Another area of concern was an independent parent/board run Christian school not associated with any church or denomination. As a result, Wil founded West-Mont Christian Academy in conjunction with Pottstown Youth Centre. West-Mont Christian Academy has grown to become an independent school on a large, multi-building campus in North Coventry Township with almost 400 students, grades K through 12. Wil continues an active role on the West-Mont Christian Academy Board.
